A tour at Chowrasta Market
Chowrasta Market or Pasar Chowrasta is located in the inner city of George Town. The name comes from Urdu (registered language belong to an Indo-european family) meaning "four cross roads". the positioning of chowrasta market where major roads meet. In this case of Chowrasta Market, it is bordered by Penang Road, Chowrasta Road, Kuala Kangsar Road and Tamil Street. But for the locals, we called it "Ke Leng Ga Bansan" in Hokkien meaning Indian Market.
many locals love to walk and shop at chowrasta market as one will be able to find almost anything from fresh food, fruits, cheap clothes even snacks, i would say is a fresh "air-conditioned" open air supermarket. a lot of bargaining, laughter, argument will fill the air creating for some musical language and for others noisy environment but fun.
a walk down the street and you see every stall with huge yellow red blue and green umbrella, all stalls taking a shade from the morning sun. many local mouth watering dishes can be filled into your empty morning stomach along this walk, wan tan mee, chee cheong cheok, yao char kuih, Yee Ya kuih preserve fruits and more.
knowing you are able to get this from the normal supermarket but i bet you will get a much greater deal here.
Yao Char Kuih freshly made, Cooked and serve hot from the oil boiling wok, this is a wonderful match with a hot cup of black coffee. you will regret not trying this in Penang. get the yao char kuih and walk into the old fashion coffee shop and yelled for a cup of "KOPI O kau Kau"
